| One of America's top swimmers turns 300 |
|
Tuesday, Jan. 17, marks Benjamin Franklin's 300th birthday. While many people are aware of Franklin's role as one of the founding fathers of the United States and are familiar with his portrait on the $100 bill, not many people realize that he was an avid swimmer. In fact, he's the only founding father to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Franklin taught himself to swim in an era in which most people could not, and even thought about becoming a full-time swim instructor. His journal entries include descriptions of inventions thought to be the forerunners of hand paddles and fins, and ISHOF counts him as one of the United States' first marathon and synchronized swimmers. He also advised on water safety and proposed the idea of universal learn-to-swim classes. For more information on Franklins contributions to the swimming world, check out his profile at ishof.org |
